Born the middle child in a family of six on a cattle ranch in Colorado's Yampa River Valley, Janet grew up surrounded by hardworking parents, wide-open spaces, and a menagerie of animals. This nurturing environment instilled in her a lifelong passion for the outdoors and animals—especially horses. Many cherished memories from her youth continue to inspire her writing.
Like many children, Janet Muirhead dreamed big about her future. She was determined to own a sprawling horse ranch—and even had a friendly wager with her brother over who would build the biggest one.
Life, however, has a way of reshaping our paths and dreams. Over the years, new aspirations emerged: working in an orphanage to care for children, raising a large family in a rural setting (she ultimately had four children, who remain a profound blessing in her life), or becoming a pediatrician. She was nearly finished with her pre-med studies when a family emergency derailed those plans, preventing her from attending medical school. Instead, one of her most cherished dreams came true in loving and helping raise her grandchildren.
Yet through it all, a deep love of story quietly persisted. Inspired by her older sister, Janet discovered the joy of reading and writing at a young age.
Her vivid imagination was evident early on, and it blossomed further during her time at Montana State University. After leaving pre-med in her senior year, she returned to school with a new major and an English Writing minor. In a Guided Imagery elective, one powerful vision changed everything: she saw a raven as her spirit guide, pulling a quill from its wing feathers and offering it to her as a gift—a timeless tool for writing. This profound symbol ignited her writing career.
Her childhood dream of ranch life never fully faded. Janet has owned horses throughout much of her adult life, and today she lives with her husband, Stan, on a small acreage in rural Montana, where two aging ponies keep her company.
